Dentists always tell us at that cleaning the importance of flossing, even when we are practicing good dental habits, but with the power toothbrushes that have seen improvements over the years, is flossing each time you brush still necessary?

Absolutely! Even though power brushes are more effective today than when they first hit the market, they still only do part of the job. The reason is plaque buildup cannot just be scrubbed away; it has to be scraped out; especially near the gums, where it can harden more than just on the tooth enamel. Also, power brushes need to have their heads replaced after wear, but if they get too worn before replacement and are continued to be used, they are virtually ineffective. Floss on the other hand, gets in-between the gum and the tooth, where hidden plaque buildup is most prevalent, and power brushes only skim the surface. In addition to benefitting from using a power toothbrush to scrub away a layer of plaque from the tooth, correct flossing removes the harder plaque. Dental hygienists provide instructions on how to correctly floss, yet it can take time to fully floss each tooth, and that’s where people get lazy.

One quick swipe between each tooth doesn’t do the trick. It’s best after brushing to floss with at least three motions on either side of the tooth from the gum to the top of each side, wrapping the floss as much as possible so that it hugs the tooth. Also, regular floss and the fingers are the best way to floss, as opposed to using flossing picks, as they don’t wrap around the tooth. Even though it can take up to ten minutes to floss an entire set of teeth, making it a routine will condition people to allow proper time to care for their teeth.
